Standards as Developed in the NETS for Students

The technologies that are widely available to teachers in K-12 education to facilitate teaching, learning, and communications are desktop computers, laptops, netbooks, tablets, SmartBoards, e-book readers, game consoles, and smart phones. For the second grade, I feel the Creativity and Innovation, the Communication and Collaboration, and the Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making standards are right on target and will be easy to implement in my classroom. Eight and nine year old children are very creative and innovative. They are also able to communicate with each other and work together in a collaborate method for a common project. When given grade appropriate materials, these students can also think in a critical manner, solve problems, and make decisions to complete their assignments.

A SmartBoard can be used in the typical K-12 classroom to enhance teaching and learning by showing all the students in the classroom pictures and a video regarding the subject matter. As a teacher, I can access websites that have interactive educational games and put the games on the SmartBoard for my students to play allowing them to have fun and learn at the same time. “Interactive whiteboards assist in delivering course content to all students. Whiteboards can help students learn content standards and computers skills, and paired with interactive games, they can increase student motivation” (Schweder & Wissick, 2008).

Students can use netbooks with internet access to go to websites like Study Island and Compass Odyssey where they can review, refresh, and relearn subject matter previously taught in class, thus keeping the subject matter fresh in their minds and improving their assessment scores. “Students in Miamisburg School District in Ohio began using Study Island during the 2006–2007 school year.
