Scientific Revolution

The scientific revolution ranged from around 1540 through 1690. Historians said that “the real origin both of the modern world and the modern mentality (466).” The scientific revolution helped introduce western societies to physics, astronomy, and medicine involving reasoning and experimentation.

Historian didn’t begin to use the term science till around the nineteenth century. Natural philosophy was considered to be the greatest disciplines. It was based on the basic questions of how the universe functioned and its purpose. Thomas Aquinas, a medieval theologian, put Aristotelian philosophy together with Christian doctrines. Once they formed the two together they believed that the earth was the center of the universe, but it did not revolve. They also believed that planets, sun, and starts were crystal spheres. Even though Aristotle’s cosmology made sense, it did not tell why the planets and stars were in motion or explain why the planets moved backwards. In the second-century Ptolemy, a Greek scholar, came up with a theory stating that “the planets moved in small circles, called epicycles, each of which moved in turn along a larger circle (466).”

During the scientific revolution they were able to accomplish many things. First the medieval scholars started to study ancient texts. The Muslims had many ancient texts were all written in Arabic. In the twelfth century scholars were able to translate these texts into Latin. By doing this they were able to gain great knowledge about Arabic mathematics. Scholars learned about the concept of algorithm, algebra, measurements, and decimal notation.

Another thing scholars were able to learn during the scientific revolution was geometry. Scholars learned geometry by investing into literature and art.
