Abstract

The Self-Worth Theory is often used to explain how an individual’s life is affected by both positive and negative influences. Comparatively, positive influences have greater motivational affects to an individual self-esteem. There are many positive motivational factors used to inspire an individual to achieve their goals, and great success. Several beneficial health effects can be reaped by an individual who is positively motivated. The foundation of Self-Worth can be found in obtaining the basic needs to live and accomplish daily tasks.

Self-Worth Theory: Motivational Concepts That Can Improve an Individuals Self-Esteem

Throughout the history of mankind, individuals have always been engaged in a battle within themselves to find value, purpose, and the meaning of their lives. This value, which often has been referred to as self-esteem or personal image, is in essence an emotional response to the self. It has led individuals to failure, and promoted success throughout the ages. Since 1974, the affect of an individuals’ value in their daily life, from going to school, functioning in a work environment, and even interaction in personal relationships, can be explained through the Self-worth Theory. Pioneered by Dr. Martin Covington, this theory asserts that a person’s ability to achieve is directly linked to the perceptions of themselves (Convington, 1984). For an individual to maintain high-self esteem, positive motivation is best utilized to inspire and drive that person to achieve their goals.
