Question 5 – Chapter 12

What advantages do formulas have over standard data in establishing time standards?

There are several advantages formulas have over standard data in establishing time standards. The first is that the time study formulae have a better application for non-repetitive work that is difficult to obtain in an individual time study. In addition, formulas provide greater consistency over a range of different analysts and for the standards computed by a given analyst. A time study formula provides a visual chart providing a graphical representation. The chart provides more information, including the variable elements, and can maintain more data and be represented on only one page. This makes searching for required data and deciphering the data that much easier. Also, the formula study can provide the needed time standard before the beginning of normal production. The time that it takes to develop the formula is much less than the time it would take complete a time study. Once established, the time savings for the analyst is evident.

Question 7 – Chapter 12

What are the characteristics of a sound time study formula?

The characteristics of a sound time study formula include 4 elements. The first is identifying the variables. The analyst must be careful to distinguish between a dependent variable and an independent variable. Most often, the dependent variable is time since the setting of time is what the analyst is looking for in the long run. The second element that is required is to collect and study the data over a large number of samples. It is important to determine what independent variables affect the time and how. The more data used and collected, the more normalization will be seen for the process. The third step in providing a sound time study formula is plotting and computing the variable...
