RESEARCH REPORT PROPOSAL

Topic

I propose to examine the extent of the overpopulation issue in Bangladesh and its effects and causes. I am also going to offer solutions and recommendations to curb the problems that it has caused to the country today. With reference to Ronald Wright’s “A Short History Of Progress”, I am going to explore correlations between the overpopulation issue and his theory of progress trap.

Scope/ Scoping Questions

1. What is overpopulation?

2. What are the effects of overpopulation? Has it affected other issues in the country? (agriculture, economy etc.)

3. How rampant is overpopulation in Bangladesh? How small is the country and how many people are there in it?

4. What are the causes of overpopulation in Bangladesh? Was it intended?

5. Who is to blame? The government or the Bangladeshi culture?

6. What is the government has done, or doing to tackle this problem?

7. Were there any attempts of prevention back in the day when it was not too bad?

8. With reference to Ronald Wright’s views, is it considered a progress trap? Did it bring any good in the earlier stages?

9. Are there any solutions/ recommendations that we can propose to tackle to solve this problem?

Approach

I will look at several high quality peer-reviewed sources from several academic journals, news sources that has reported the problems overpopulation has caused to Bangladesh and its people, government press releases that acknowledges this issue, scientific and geographical research reports that could provide statistics of the extent of overpopulation.

I will then analyze the problem upon discovering the history of the population growth, causes, effects, and any political involvements to date. I will also attempt to find links between Ronald Wright’s theory of the progress trap and the said issue. Lastly, I will come up with recommendations and solutions that could curb the overpopulation in Bangladesh.
