Case Study 7

The New Security System- Buying In

1. What is Stefan’s Performance Readiness level for working with the black box technology (R1, R2, R3, or R4)? Why?

In this case, Stefan’s Performance Readiness level for working with the black box technology is R1. He seems very insecure, and not willing to go with the “flow” of this new implementation of the new “black box” security system. He lacks motivations and commitment, so much that he is willing to transfer to the customer service department than have to start all over again with the new security system. He doesn’t want to learn something which brings out a red flag of what kind of employee he is, unwilling and lack of confidence to learn something innovative. It seems to me that Stephan doesn’t like change and has no motivation to take on more responsibilities; he is definitely not a “go getter”; no ambition what so ever.

2. What is Erika’s Performance Readiness level for working with the black box technology (R1, R2, R3, or R4)? Why?

Angie’s performance readiness level for working with the black box technology is R2. An R2 performance readiness level is unable but confident or willing. As the book mentions, “The follower lacks ability, but is motivated and making an effort” or “Unable but confident. The follower lacks ability but is confident as long as the leader is there to provide guidance. (Hersey, 2013, p. 119). In this case Angie is not a quitter; she seems like a team player. She does not know how to fix the problems but she is more than willing to learn and help her customers. She demonstrates eagerness and hard work, compassion towards her customers, she feels the need to help and resolve the problem as quickly as possible. In doing so, she knows that the consequences of this will help her keep her job, showing that she cares and has the need for the job. She gives it her all and that shows confidence and willingness.
