Abstract

This research paper will explore some of the components that are involved when marketing a product. Three marketing environment forces that will be identified in this paper are economic, competitive, and social forces. The research product that will be discussed is laundry detergent.

Laundry Detergent

Introduction

Laundry detergent is a chemical that is used to wash the dirt and the smell out of clothes. It is used in washing machines or by hand, and it leaves your clothes feeling soft and smelling fresh. Laundry detergent is a product that households can’t live without. Laundry detergent comes in liquid formula and powder formula and is sold in a variety of stores. It also comes in fragrance or fragrance free for people with sensitive skin.

Market Force 1: Description and Analysis of impact on product/service

People are finding ways to cut back on spending because of the recent economic condition. A normal household with working adults is doing more laundry at home opposed to dry cleaning. Therefore more people in the working industry are wearing causal clothes. The laundry detergent industry has made the detergent more effective by making the liquid detergent more concentrated. The average load of dirty clothes only need a half of cup of liquid detergent, opposed to a full cup of powder detergent. According to (Chang, 1998) liquid detergent sales jumped above 10 percent to $2.23 billion while the sale of powder were stagnant, causing it to decline to $2.07 billion. Liquid detergent has such an advantage on powder detergent laundry because it doesn’t leave residue in the washing machines and it doesn’t leave the powder residue on your clothes.

The laundry detergent industry is constantly looking for ways to improve, but at the same time it remains cost efficient for the middle to low class environment.
