The Large Class policy is anti-faculty because it will indeed lessen the teacher’s units but increase their workload. The set criteria to qualify teachers of Large Classes will likely to cause mass-layoff

The Large Class policy is anti-academic freedom because despite being widely criticized, it has been decided upon unilaterally. The decision-making process is founded in unsubstantial and uncited study making such process undemocratic and not consultative. The policy is also unconstitutional because Chancellor Velasco by-passed the power of the UP Board of Regents, particularly Section 13-C of the UP Charter of 2008, which says that the BOR shall “approve the institution, merger or abolition of academic programs, upon recommendation of the University Council of the constituent university concerned, through the President of the University.”

The memorandum drew the ire mostly of the junior faculty members (those who have yet to satisfy academic requirements for tenure) and the students who said the policy was “anti-student, anti-faculty, and anti-academic freedom.”

Maria Elena Carlos, Youth Lead coordinator, said the policy will cause a decrease in the quality of education as it will “generally overhaul teaching approaches and lessen student participation and critical discussions in class.”

“The policy will also lessen the teachers’ units while increasing their workload, aside from causing a possible mass layoff of teachers,” she added.
