1) The New Manifest Destiny believed that America must by God and by history expand to the continent of North America. They believed it would advocate and that it was time to claim new territory. However, the 1840's version had Americans( mostly Caucasians) who defended the Westward expansion but those against expansion (Indians, Mexicans, and other western regions) did not want to be "absorbed" into the republican system. Therefore, Westward expansion became a movement to spread both political system and a racially defined society. Many believed America should expand peacefully or not at all.

2) The end of War of 1812 allowed America to resume it's economic growth. After inflation, non farm workers annual income grew by 75% from 1865 to 1900. Then another 22% by 1918. The nation's exports had totaled about $392 million in 1870, by 1890, the figure was $857 million, and by 1900 it was $1.4 billion.

3) Defenders of imperialism argued that building an empire was needed for the health, survival and their own industrializing nations. They argued that imperialism is good for colonized people and it was an advantage to export Christianity to "heather" lands, but secular apologist argued that imperialism helped bring colonized people into the modern world. Some Americans feared that no territory would be left for them to take. Others worried that nations or races will struggle constantly for existence.
