What is a mission statement? A mission statement declares the purpose of a business or organization, and provides the framework to help guide the company’s strategies and actions by defining the enterprise’s overall agenda. A properly formulated mission statement will serve multiple purposes; to help guide internal decision making, and also to pronounce the business’s mission to the public community, customers, suppliers and stakeholders (Hom, 2013).

The American owned company United Parcel Service (UPS) is the largest logistics and shipping company in the world. From UPS’s official corporate website, UPS defines its mission as to “Grow our global business by serving the logistics needs of customers, offering excellence and value in all that we do. Maintain a financially strong company-with broad employee ownership-that provides a long-term competitive return to our shareowners. Inspire our people and business partners to do their best, offering opportunities for personal development and success. Lead by example as a responsible, caring, and sustainable company making a difference in the communities we serve (UPS Public Relations, n.d.)”.

FedEx Corporation is another large American owned business in the courier industry. As these are two of the biggest shipping businesses in the world, they are naturally major competitors. According to their official corporate website, “FedEx Corporation will produce superior financial returns for its shareowners by providing high value-added logistics, transportation and related business services through focused operating companies. Customer requirements will be met in the highest quality manner appropriate to each market segment served. FedEx will strive to develop mutually rewarding relationships with its employees, partners and suppliers. Safety will be the first consideration in all operations....
