Summary

The case study was about the Office Equipment Company (OEC) in Lima Peru in 1997, where the existing Managing Director suddenly resigned and will leave the company within one month. A committee at Sales and Service Facility office in Peru had to select best candidates for replacement. The new Managing Director will reside in Lima Peru which politically unstable and at times has bordered on being a full-scale civil war.

The OEC in Peru is currently constructing its first assembly factory and scheduled to begin operations in 1999. By the time, the new Managing Director will oversee the Sales & Service section and Assembly operations in terms of accounting, finance and labor relations. Besides that, the new Managing Director also will have to manage 100 existing staff in Sales & Service and about 150 workers under assembly operations.

The committee has shortlisted five candidates from internal selection for the position, and all of them has years of working experience with OEC. And OEC also has selection policy and criteria for the position as listed belowMust be internal candidates.

■ Must be internal candidates.

■ Company policy is to employ combinations of home-, host-, and third-country nationals for the top position in foreign countries.

■ Managers rotate from foreign and US locations.

■ Candidate must have international experience.

■ Ability to speak in Spanish will be an advantage.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

1. The current Managing Director resigned and caused problem for OEC to find replacement within one month.

Sudden announcement by current Managing Director to resign within one month has caused problem to OEC. This is because the OEC has to find candidate who is willing to work at Peru which is currently in schedule to construct it’s first factory and also experiencing a political turmoil which could boil to a full fledge civil war....
