CLIMATE OF INDIA:

1.With reference to the Bay of Bengal branch of the South-West Monsoon, answer

the following question:

(i) What is the direction of the rain-bearing winds which blow over the Gangetic

and Brahmaputra basins?

(ii) Name the area which receives the heaviest rainfall from these winds.

(iii) Name two ranges of hills which are responsible for this rainfall.

(iv) State two causes of floods in the Gangetic and Brahmaputra basin.

2.Give a reason to explain why:

(i) The annual rainfall in Rajasthan is less than 25 cm.

(ii) Trivandrum gets heavy rainfall in June.

(iii) Vishakhapatnam gets heavier rainfall than Hydrabad.

(iv) Kolkata gets heavier rainfall than Varanasi.

(v) Mumbai gets heavier rainfall than Pune.

(vi) The Punjab gets rain in winter.

(vii) Mangalore and Chennai lie approximately on the same latitude, yet Mangalore

receives its annual rainfall from June-Sep while Chennai gets its rain in

November-December.

3. Study the climatic data and answer the following questions:

(ii) What is the annual range of temperature in station B?

(iii) Name the winds that bring most of the rainfall to station B.

State one reason for your answer.

(iv) Which of the two stations has an equable climate?
