Discuss the issue of imperialism as a factor in the election of 1900 and explain the policy that the United States eventually adopted for governing the territories it controlled outside the limits of the continental United States.

The issue of imperialism was a factor during the election of 1900 because as Roosevelt was president from 1901 to 1909, and being the most dominant personality for 15 years, he had made such a fuss and noise about the activist role he thought the United States should play in the world. As for his policy, Roosevelt divided the world into civilized and uncivilized, where the civilized nations had a responsibility to “police” the uncivilized, not to maintain order but also spreading superior values and institutions. As he implemented his policies, he often seemed “hard to hold.” However, Roosevelt’s foreign policy in Latin America, Eastern Asia, and Europe paved the way for the vital role as a world power that the United States would play for the next country. As president, his ideal was “nation of men, not weaklings.” Since he strongly encouraged the idea of fitness, he believed to be militarily prepared and to fight well were tests of racial superiority and national greatness. Furthermore, with his policy, taking on the “white man’s burden,” civilized nations sometimes had to wage war on the uncivilized, as the British did against the Boers and the Americans did in the Philippines. These wars were justified because the victors bestowed the blessings of culture and racial superiority on the vanquished.
