India & China. Comparison and relations.
PPF:
Past:
Historically, both India and China have been among worlds oldest civilizations i.e the Indus valley civilization and Hun dynasty.
Cultural and economic exchanges have existed since the ancient times
Eg: The spread of Buddhism in South East Asia was catalyzed by chinese scholars who visited India and stayed here for decades.
Both the countries have been part of the prosperous Silk trade route . Silk Route, is a series of trade and cultural transmission routes that connected regions of the Asian continent to the West and East by linking traders, merchants, pilgrims, monks, soldiers, nomads, and urban dwellers from China and India to the Mediterranean Sea during various periods of time.
Present:
The contemporary relations have been characterized by border disputes: some notable mentions are Sino-Indian wars of 1967, 1987.
Presently, many border issues need to be resolved for eg: Arunachal pradesh disputed land, construction of border gaurd posts by the chinese on an disputed territory.
Recently, when Chinese premier Xi-Jinping visited India, there was a stand off between People Liberation Army and Indian Army in the south eastern ladak region. Though there was no military violence, but many geo-strategic analysts view this as an impediment to resolution of border issues and peace talks.
On an economic agenda, since the late 1980s, both countries have successfully attempted to reignite diplomatic and economic ties. Though bilateral trade has continuously grown, India faces massive trade imbalance heavily in favour of China. Trade deficit as of now is approx $29 billion with China.
In 2008, China emerged as India's largest trading partner.
In 2012, Manmohan singh and Wein Jiabo set a goal to increase bilateral trade between the two countries to US$100 billion by 2015
Future:
In Sept 2014, the chinese premier Xi jinping visited India.
