“My Brother Calls Me ‘Bug Eyes’”: A Case Study on the Endocrine System

1. The two hormones commonly referred to as the thyroid hormones are thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). The function of the two thyroid hormones are to increase metabolism, increases heat production, increase protein synthesis, regulate tissue growth and development and maintain blood pressure (Marieb & Hoehn, 2013).

2. An overactive thyroid would cause Krista’s weight loss, sweating, and elevated heart rate. The overactive thyroid causes the body to release more thyroid hormone in the body that causes the body to have a higher basal metabolic rate which causes an increase in body heat production and cause heartbeat and increase sweating (Marieb & Hoehn, 2013).

3. The purpose of a thyroid-stimulating hormone is that it controls the production of thyroxine and triiodothyronine by binding to the receptors located on cells on the thyroid gland. The thyroid-stimulating hormone is produced and released by the pituitary gland (Marieb & Hoehn, 2013).

4. The secretion of TSH is regulated under normal conditions by a negative feedback system. The pituitary gland is like a regulator that controls how much thyroid hormone is released in the blood stream by making more or less TSH. When there is not enough thyroid hormone in the body, the pituitary gland makes more TSH causing the production and release of more thyroid hormone. If there is too much thyroid hormone in the body, the pituitary makes less TSH that’ll cause less thyroid hormone (Marieb & Hoehn, 2013).

5. Graves’ disease is a disorder that leads to the over activity of the thyroid gland by stimulating TSH receptors on the thyroid gland. This usually causes the thyroid to enlarge and can become twice its normal size or more, it is known as goiter (“Goiter.” 2014).

6. Krista’s TSH level is low instead of high because her pituitary gland is trying to compensate for the excess T3 and T4 hormones in her blood. It has stopped...
