Chapter 1.

Tony Samson arrived in the Philippines from America. He was to visit his father in prison in Muntinlupa who had been given up, forgotten and denied. His father killed a hacendero and burned a municipal building. When he arrived on prison they talk and discuss some things where Tony led him in a bench at one end of the hall. His father wants to see his daughter and his grandchildren. Then he asked Tony why he came home in the Philippines. Tony answered, that he studied to be a teacher. Then Tony asks permission that he may be getting married soon. His father thanked him for still honouring as his father. Then after the discussion about the wedding, his father tells what will happen to him when in case he dies. “My body will sell to a medical school in Manila and students will cut me up.” And he request to Tony that don’t let him cut, take his body back to Rosales and burry his body beside her mother. And the bell above on the barracks rang. The visiting hour is over.

Tony went to the Antipolo where her sister Betty lives. Betty was her sister who was married to Bert a Clerk on a Chinese flour importer in Binondo and had three sons. On home he saw her sister in the kitchen and cooking pinakbet. On their dinner Tony said to Betty that he will be getting married. And Betty asked “to whom?” Bert said. “Carmen Villa?” Then Tony nodded. Bert enthused but Betty aghast and overjoyed at the same time. Betty Pretends. She wants to invite the governor to show them that they have someone important and have influential acquaintances. But Tony refused. They talked about the pride, the debts of Tony to her Sister. After that Tony went up to his room.
