The East Coast of the United States is in a very good spot for large storms. These storms have caused problems in the states that cover the East Coast. The aftermath of some of these storms is devastating. The most common aftereffect of a storm is water. Water can rise or flood in spots not wanted by citizens on the East Coast. Something needs to be implemented to counteract these unwanted side effects of storms.

There is currently no real flood prevention plan for the East Coast. A perfect example of this is Hurricane Sandy. When water flooded downtown Manhattan, New York City transit workers attempted to make barricades out of sandbags and plywood (Fischetti, 2013). The water surged right through these barricades and proceeded to flood the subways. This could have been prevented if there was a proper storm prevention system. There have been many suggested ways to prevent the water rising or floods for the East Coast. One way is Beach Nourishment (Fischetti, 2013). Beach Nourishment requires large amount of sand, dredging from offshore borrows is the preferred method of sediment supply (Journal of Coastal Research. 2005, p202-233.). These large sums of sand are then spread out on East Coast beaches in attempt to slow down the rising of the water. This is a losing game. This operation costs lots of money and lots of resources (sand), and can’t be kept up for very long. Routine tides and storms relentlessly wash away beach sand, it fans out across the seafloor in thin layers that cannot be harvested (Fischetti, Mark. Scientific American. Jun2013). This act could be kept up for some time but would not be effective or very practical. The other options consist of barricades and walls. Barricades and walls are great solutions but cost lots of money. Money is the main dilemma in many of these suggestions. The U.K. and Netherlands have already established barriers for storm protection. The Netherlands and the U.K. have spent huge amounts of money for coastal flood...
