There are many variables when it comes to group communication. First of all the purpose of a group is to share information and to see how people interact among each other. One of the most important skills when it comes to communicating is the ability to listen to someone. A group’s overall effectiveness however depends on the people involved willing to communicate among one another. Without positive feedback of communication, misunderstandings can occur within the group. Communication styles can be different within the group and this is where individual respect is important to effective group communication. Keep communication simple; people absorb information differently and at varying rates (Levi, D. 2001). So when communicating in groups speaking clearly, listening and making sure everyone understands the task need to be communicated.

For example, my area at work had to participate in a group case forum involving a patient treatment plan. During the preparation of the group, we all had different aspects involving the patient. When we did present the information we were all on the same page and the outcome was effective, due to us being able to communicate among one another.

In some instances conflicts due arise when groups are involved. People have different points of view and don’t agree on everything. Which results in communication being one-sided, poor listening skills, and lack of open and sharing communication due to people feeling like they are not being unheard. Poor communication in the workplace can lead to poor relations between employees and an unfriendly work atmosphere in general that renders workers inefficient and ineffective (Wicks, D. n.d.). I also experienced this tension at my workplace. For example after a group meeting my co-workers and I felt like our voices wasn’t heard, even though we had input, it was overlooked and an ineffective group communication. As a result the moral at work was very poor.
