What are the important qualities an employer looks for in an employee?

In the article written by Keliman (1999), explains that managers seek individuals that are fast and open to learning. It is through these values that they examine if the individual meets the “corporate culture” in their environment. “The Human Element of Business Inc., in El Paso, Texas [is a] company [that] does executive search and outsourcing of corporate human resource services” (p. J8). The company uses assessments to establish if a candidate for employment meets the criteria of the company. Employment assessments can evaluate roles (personality, work ethic, and etc.) in an individual.

Testing can be used to evaluate multiple aspects of an organization such as a candidate meeting the criteria for employment, a way to measure what needs (re)evaluation in the work place or what employees want from the company. Dessler (2009) explains that “As technology in areas like testing and interviewing began to emerge, the personnel department began to play an expanded role in employee selection, training, and promotion” (p.6). Most companies utilize testing as a preliminary format to examine future employees. In many of the evaluations personality tests are a prominent feature to examine candidates. Post- evaluation managers must access if the employee will assist in meeting the goals for the company or not quite what they were look for. The tests can be seen as a positive for those who are do well at standardized personality exams. It is an easy way to gather individuals with commonalities. It is from the commonalities that the individual is then brought to the next round of employment. Evaluations are very common in the workplace leading to positive and negative results.
