Introduction

On May 5th, 2013 we students at Rutgers and participants of “Dance Appreciation class” were able to enjoy and appreciate the DANCEPLUS show at Mastrobuono Theater. The first performance was called, “Malady of the Spirit” and it was choreographed by Kayla Collymore. The last performance of the dance show was called, “Atomic Orbital” and it was choreographed by Laura Peterson, with contributions from the dancers. In my opinion the DANCEPLUS’s purpose was to appreciate the art and creativity that was performed by the dancers. It also showed the hard work, dedication and sacrifices these people have made throughout their college careers.

“Malady of the Spirit” – May 5th, 2013 – DANCEPLUS at Victoria J. Mastrobuono Theater

I enjoyed the “Malady of the Spirit” very much and found a strong connection with the message it conveyed. This performance was more of a modern one and therefore more interesting. There were some parts during the show which might have been controversial for some people and pure art for the others, this included – a young man without a shirt which was twisting his shoulders and exploiting his back muscles along with some bones. The dance combined with the music told a story about how people’s lives run out of time. The suspense that the music created made the dance much easier to interpret. As the song was playing in the background and some of the dancing parts showed pushing and throwing each other on the ground, I interpreted that as a human need to rush things in life. This dance made me realize how badly one struggles and wastes his life to achieve something desired. I think that this performance speaks to many different groups of people, because everyone goes through this. The ticking of a clock in the background fastened the heart beat in the audience as performers executed their dance moves.
