Evaluating the Scope

To create an effective work breakdown structure, which is; the “process of subdividing project deliverables and project work into smaller, more manageable components” (Project Management Institute, Inc., 2013) this approach is a five step process. These five steps are; “determine your strategy developing a work breakdown structure, identify the highest level components of work to be accomplished, break work process into small components, name the component, and make sure work has been broken down to the lowest level desired” (Project Management Advisor, 2006).

The first step is between the project manager and the project team, to determine the best suited strategy to successfully complete the project. The next step is identifying the project deliverables, life cycle phases, milestones, and hierarchal responsibility. The third step is dividing each components into smaller more manageable components. The fourth step is to name each component to properly describe the task associated with that component. The final step would involve making sure that each component is broken down to the lowest and most manageable level possible, in order to keep each step simple and attainable.

Work Breakdown Structure

According to the PMBOK, “The WBS organizes and defines the total scope of the project, and represents the work specified in the current approved project scope statement” (Project Management Institute, Inc., 2013). WBS, also known as the Work Breakdown Structure, is a breakdown of the total scope of the project in order for the project team to accomplish the project objectives and understand what needs to be completed when and by who. It is important for the WBS to be as detail and easily to understand as possible because this is what the project team uses as a guide as the project progresses.
