The major generational changes in both Hong Kong and mainland Chinese society and the similarities and differences between the post-80 generation in China and Hong Kong

1. Introduction To begin with, “generation” refers to a group of individuals born in approximately same period of time which means they grew up in similar living environment, affected by same significant social issues or social changes. As a result, they have similar characteristics for example thoughts, attitudes, problems and behavior etc. In this essay, there are mainly two parts. In the first part of the essay, the major generational changes in both Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese society will be discussed. And in the second part, the similarities and differences between the post-80 generation in China and Hong Kong will be illustrated. 2. Major Generational Change in Hong Kong “In Hong Kong, there are four generations” written by Professor Lui Tai Lok in his book (Lui 15). The major generational change between the four generations will be discussed in this part. The first generation is people who born before The Second World War ( born before 1946 ) (Lui 15). As they went through the war, they were all deeply affected by the war. The

Man 2 people of this generation have a taciturn, low-profile, stubborn and conservative personality. When talking about their living style, they are thrifty, hard-working, dependable and they use to finish all the things on their own. The second generation is people who born in “Postwar baby boom” ( born between 1946 and 1965 ) (Lui 27). They were grown up in a society which had a rapid population growth, economic growth and intense competition. As a result, they have a enterprising, arrogant and self-absorbed personality.
