Integrity
Having integrity as a leader is of the upmost importance. Integrity is living up to your word as a leader, complete honesty even when some do not want to hear it, and admitting when you make mistakes and working to fix those mistakes. John Maxwell said, “Integrity is all-encompassing. It’s not something you demonstrate at home or church and set on a shelf at work. People of integrity don’t live bifurcated lives; their morals, ethics, treatment of others and overall character are the same wherever they are, whatever they’re doing.” I believe when we look at Joshua 10:1-15 we can see a prime example of integrity in Joshua.
Joshua 10:1-15 we see that Joshua compromises his leadership when he made a treaty with the Gibeonites. In the previous chapter the Gibeonites had heard that the Lord told Joshua to kill everyone in the city and so they deceived Joshua. The Gibeonites traveled to where Joshua was and acted like poor citizens from a “distant land” seeking help and safety. Instead of consulting with God first, Joshua and the other leaders made a peace treaty that these “poor” citizens could live. The King of Jerusalem was not pleased when he found out about the treaty and he decided to go to war. The king of Jerusalem asked five other kings to join him and attack Gibeon. So the armies of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon all joined together and attacked Gibeon.. As these five kings descended upon Gideon the Gibeonites sent a plea to Joshua to “not abandon his servants” and come help them.
