Chapter 3 Discussion Questions

1.) Initiation involves defining and authorizing a project or project phase. Planning focuses on devising and maintaining a workable scheme to make sure that projects address the organization’s needs. Executing processes is when you coordinate people and other resources to carry out the various plans which then create the products, services, or the results of the project or phase. Monitoring and controlling processes include regularly measuring and monitoring progress to ensure that the project team meets the projects objectives. Closing is when you would formalize acceptance of the project and end it efficiently. Activities that occur before initiating a project are, completing the project scope statement, the work breakdown structure, and the project schedule.

2.) Good project managers spend the most amount of time in the execution process. Followed by planning, monitoring and controlling, closing and then ending off with the initiation faze. It usually done in this fashion because, “A dollar spent up front in planning is worth one hundred dollars spent after the system is implemented.”

3.) Organizations need to tailor project management concepts because each project is unique. Project teams are constantly trying to do something that has not been done before. In order to succeed at unique and new activities, project teams must do a fair amount of planning. Without these methods of planning the whole project could be unsuccessful.

4.) Some key outputs of each process group include: a team contract, a project scope statement, a work breakdown structure, a project schedule, and a list of prioritized risks.

5.) Typical challenges that project teams face during each of the five process groups for the initiating faze would be developing a good business case.
