The causes of Stress and Their Effects on the Body

Stress is something that all human beings deal with on a daily basis. Stress comes in all different shapes and forms and is subjective to the person. This means that stress is not the same for everybody and can vary in degree and how the person deals with the stress. Many factors of daily life can cause stress. Some events or tasks in life can be more stressful to one person than it is to another. The causes of stress can range from person to person, however, many things in life can be stressful to almost everybody. Stress effects the whole body: physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually (Sorrentino, 2011, p. 56). In the following paragraphs some causes of stress and the ways they effect the body are discussed as well as some coping mechanisms to help relieve stress.

Stress has many causes that change from person to person. An event or factor that causes stress is known as a stressor (Sorrentino, 2011, p. 55). Stressors can be either pleasant or negative depending on what it is. There are a couple ways that stress can be classified including whether the stressor is external or internal. Examples of external stress would be major life changes, school/work, financial struggles, and family and children. Internal stress would include things like chronic worry, rigid thinking, and perfectionism (Smith, "Stress Symptoms, Signs, and Causes", 2014). Another type of stress is imaginary stress which is very similar to internal stress. Imaginary stress is when a person causes stress in their body because of excessive worrying by putting pressures on themselves that don’t really matter.
