Community Agency Assessment

My chosen topic for Healthy People 2020 is adolescent health. The goal is to “improve the healthy development, health, safety, and well-being of adolescents and young adults” (United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Healthy People 2020 (2014). Adolescent health encompasses physical and mental health issues our youth may be facing. Adolescents more than any other group of population face peer pressure on a daily bases. Peer pressure to be included in a group by using drugs and alcohol. They may be engaging in sexual activity that can possibly lead to teenage pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Who children decide to hang out with can have a profound effect on the direction their lives take. I wish I could say that my children or other adolescents in my community will not face these challenges but that is not realistic. As a nurse I am dependent on community resources that will allow me to keep my children as well as my patients safe and educated. One of the community resources I have known and utilized as a youth was Planned Parenthood.

Purpose Statement

The purpose of this paper is to identify a community agency that will help improve the health of adolescents and young adults.

Agency Information

The agency I chose to assess is Planned Parenthood. It is an agency that provides healthcare on a global, national and local level. Planned Parenthood is a non-profit government funded agency. According to Planned Parenthoods website (2014) they have a mission that represents four core values and goals.

* “To provide comprehensive reproductive and complementary healthcare services in settings which preserve and protect the essential privacy and rights of each individual”.

* “To advocate public policies which guarantee these rights and ensure access to such services”.
