The non-alcoholic beverage industry plays an important role in the U.S. economy. Our industry has a direct economic impact of $141.22 billion, provides more than 233,000 jobs and helps to support hundreds of thousands more that depend, in part, on beverage sales for their livelihoods.  Beverage companies and their employees, and the firms and employees indirectly employed by the industry, provide significant tax revenues - more than $14 billion at the state level and $22.7 billion at the federal level - and contribute more than $765 million to charitable causes in communities across the nation.Strong bone health is an important component of strong overall health.  This is especially true for adolescents whose bodies - and bones - are still growing. According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academy of Sciences, the daily recommended calcium intake for adolescents 9 to 18 years is 1300 mg. unfortunately, many young people are not consuming enough calcium to develop strong bones. They need to be encouraged to drink milk and calcium-fortified beverages.
