As globalization gradually empowers the world economy and international trading becomes more essential than ever, the subject of the implementation of a free trade agreement between the countries of North America becomes a durable theme of many national debates. The establishment of such an agreement, now known as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), will without a doubt impact Canada economically, socially, and politically. Often, critics of NAFTA rely on the major arguments that not only will Canada lose its national sovereignty as economic pressures threaten the country to adopt and harmonize with policies of the United States, but the Canadian economy will also suffer unfair labour and environmental standards.
