Week 2’s Reflection

COM/530

The economy that we live in today is totally diverse in terms of various aspects. This has led to global corporations where people from diverse groups work together. In such a scenario, people face various barriers amongst which the most important are language, religious and sexual barriers. Multinational companies, which have their business units in many different countries, face similar challenges. While some countries totally deny the presence of women in the workforce, other countries neglect the use of foreign languages in communication. Certain countries also insist upon following specific religions. An excellent model that helps groups or teams at work to grow, face challenges, tackle problems, find solutions and deliver results is the five-stage model of group development. The valuable information obtained from this topic enables us to work around various issues that arise due to cultural diversity. It helps employees to understand the theory of working in groups despite all differences, to accept each individual’s behavior and to accept challenges. But, not every company takes steps to adjust to the cultural barriers. Such companies, like NAME X’s, follow a hierarchy that does not change over time.

Explanation on group formation helped us understand better about few of our colleagues. However, some of us work individually and hence do not find it relevant to our fields, due to lack of group working experience.

Small business enterprises that have very less culturally diversified employees might find it difficult to understand the topic on cultural context and people who work in their individual ways make it difficult to the implementation of new processes and suggestions in an organization.
