ILM 3 Assignment No.1.

Problem Solving.

Candidate Name: Bradley Hunt.

Background.

The organisation I work in is ‘The Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust Hospital’ in Exeter. The Trust employs around 7,000 staff and serves a population of more than 400,000 people in Exeter, East Devon and Mid-Devon. The Hospital has over 800 beds over two sites at Wonford and Heavitree.

My role within the organisation is within the Logistics Department.

The Logistics Department is the main source of non-Pharmaceutical medical supplies within the Hospital.

My role is to manage the ‘Materials Management’ team, consisting of 7 full time staff. This team, manage the day-to-day non-Pharmaceutical medical consumables at Ward and Department level. We currently supply over 80 areas.

Under the current system, there is no main warehouse to service the Hospital. Therefore, the stock lines required, for each department, are ordered by the team. These goods are delivered, on a two day turnaround, each working day, from an NHS Supply Chain store situated at Bridgwater, Somerset.

Under this system, the only stock held on site, is the stock held on the Wards and Departments.

Also, within the Logistics Department is the ‘Receipts and Distribution’ team, consisting of 3 full time staff, this team, receipt and deliver the majority of goods ordered direct from suppliers, by end users via EROS . We deliver to individual ward and department areas in the main building and other buildings on site.

Our department, as a cost saving project, are currently in the process of setting up a small on-site ‘warehouse’ facility. We order, direct from suppliers via the EROS system, therefore this has taken some of the stock lines away from the NHS Supply Chain delivery system. We have targeted the ‘quickest moving’ as well as the ‘biggest savings’ with the products we have chosen.

Describe a problem, its nature, scope and impact.
