Topic 1 – class differences in achievement (1) external factors

1) Explain briefly what is meant by the term elaborated speech code.

Elaborated code refers to language which is more complex and uses wider vocabulary. This language is used in textbooks, by teachers and the well educated people who is usually the middle class people.

2) Identify three policies that governments have introduced to compensate for material and cultural disadvantage, apart from the education priority areas.

- Operation head start introduced in the 1960s: helped compensate for material and cultural disadvantage by helping preschool education in poorer areas, helping development of skills and motivating individuals. They also set up nursery classes to help improve development of children and socialise them into the correct attitude and values which they would have missed out during their primary socialisation stage.

- Sure start intruded in 2000: policy introduced to tackle poverty and social exclusion. By 2010 there were 3,500 sure start child centres which made sure all young children in disadvantaged areas had access to a centre. Provided integrated education which brought together children from different cultural backgrounds and educated them together preventing social exclusion of ethnic minorities when they started school. Worked with parents to promote intellectual physical and social development of their children.

- Education Action zones introduced in the late 1990s: policy introduced to compensate just for the material deprivation children face. They aimed to improve children’s health which would help their education by making them fit and healthy so they don’t get tired in school. Helps education children on nutrition and health so they are aware about how to look after themselves.
