Over 30 years ago, the first generation of this family, Marta and her late husband, moved to the United States. Neither spoke of English at all and was devout Catholics. The country’s long history of government and economic instability being an influence, the family immigrated to the United States to pursue the dreams of independence and freedom that the country represented. Entry into the country was not as easy as they had hoped. The United State allowed only a small amount of Portuguese per year but it was the abolishment of this quota through the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965. This is what allowed Marta and her husband to enter the country in Spokane, Washington.
