Schizophrenia

Introduction

There are many illnesses, disorders, and diseases we are faced with today; one being schizophrenia. I am sure everyone has heard of this disorder but most people probably don’t know all of the possible causes and symptoms. In the following text I will introduce you to this disorder, go into some detail on causes and symptoms, and talk about how it relates to the biblical world view.

Discussion of Key Terms

Around one percent or a little over two million people in the United States have a disorder call schizophrenia. This is “a disorder that most closely corresponds to popular concepts of insanity, madness, or lunacy” (Nevid, 2015). When most people hear the word schizophrenia they imagine a person who sees and hears things that are not there. This is not the only symptom. Schizophrenics also perceive things differently than us. They may react to bad news with a smile instead of crying or getting upset. There was a kid when I went to high school named Chris. Now in my old school we had white walls with small indents all over them. Chris used to spend all gym class staring at the wall and whispering to it. One day I decided to ask him who he was talking to because he got made fun of a lot and I wanted to try and be a friend to him. When I asked him this he told me that there were little people in the wall. He said each indent had a whole colony of people and he said he was telling them not to fight and to end wars in between them. I thought this kid had lost it! He seemed normal any other time. Since my mom is the Special Education teacher at my school I asked her if she knows Chris. She told me that he was schizophrenic and that he was not joking that his brain really saw these tiny wall people. This was the first time I was introduced to this disorder.
