Lord of the Flies

About a month ago a video was released to the world showing 1.4 million viewers what it is like to walk the streets as a woman wearing nothing more then a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. In the video the woman wonders the streets of New York for 8 hours recording the constant catcalls from various men. The most disturbing part about the video is that none of the bystanders stepped in to call out the catcallers. Many men would say it’s “flattering” to the woman but its not flattering at all, its street harassment. Unfortunately 1 in 4 woman will have been a victim of rape after they have been catcalled. I believe that it should be a part of the law for citizens to protect other citizens when it comes to such forms of harassment or violence. I feel that it should be our job to have the kindness to help someone if you see them being caught up in violence or a verbal harassment of some sort. Depending on how bad the situation, I think that it should be expected of the witness to at least call 911. Instead of just turning your shoulder and letting a crime happen causing the victim possible physical and emotional scarring witnesses can prevent all of that from happening by helping and lending a helping hand. If everyone helped out I think that society today would be a much better place and a lot of crimes that could have ended much worse wouldn’t.
