Individuality can be impossible to find in society. People are afraid to break away. The people who are afraid have not lived. To be an individual you must break away from conformity and make life momentous. Non- conformity can come with consequences, but those who are willing to break away will accept the consequences. Two transcendental heroes showed modern day people that it is okay to rebel and find the right path. Emerson and Thoreau reveal in their poetry that in order to be an individual you must rebel societal conformity, seize the day and make the best of the consequences.

A regular person is susceptible to the ways of society. A person will follow the latest trend and fall into step with the others. A movie that shows it is possible to break away is Dead Poets Society. In this movie an inspirational English teacher shows his students that they have to find themselves and who they are. “You must strive to find your own voice because the longer you wait to begin, the less likely you are going to find it at all,” said by Mr. Keating. He is telling the boys to find their voice before society takes it away from them and they will not be able to let the world know who they are and what they are meant to be.

Carpe diem, the Latin terms for seize the day. Many poets reflect their work off of this term. “ I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life,” and use every moment to, “..cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms,” to only be left with best of the experience. A transcendental hero, Henry D. Thoreau said this quote in Walden. Thoreau wanted to live life to its fullest potential and live life from different views. He saw that a person who has only seen life through one view had not lived and seen what all aspects of life have to hold. To enjoy life you must see it in every view possible.

To see all aspects of life you must rebel against society. Rebelling comes with consequences....
