Mini Case: Reaching a Win-Win Solution

A win-win solution is reached when each party in conflict feels that their interests have been considered and that they have emerged victorious (Lewicki et al, 2006). In such scenario both sides are likely to voluntarily accept the resolutions because they feel mutually satisfied. In most instances such negotiations are brain storming, require joint mediation and cooperation (Furlong, 2005).

In this conflict between Ben and Jocelyn, interest seems to be the key issue to be addressed. Ben is interested in seeing the team members are not overburdened, and that the ancillary program runs well to completion as scheduled. Jocelyn has caught interest in the intern’s ability to perform his duties well and therefore what him to help her accomplish some of her work functions. The department is also not willing to employ more employees because it is interested in maintaining its budget. Based on this analysis it is vivid that all the parties need to consult and come up with a resolution. I strongly feel that collaborative negation also known as interactive negotiation can best help solve this stalemate and ensure a successful outcome. This is because it is an interest based process that treats relationships as valuable and important while it seeks for an impartial and reasonable agreement.

The relative advantages of this type of negotiation are that it takes away the positioning factor, in that it balances in-between the interests and views of the parties, making sure that there is not biasness and personal attacks during the negotiation (Windle, et al 2010). It is consensual, focuses on joint resolution, and therefore considers all ideas and interests of the conflicting parties.
