The short story Metamorphosis is about a man named Gregor who one morning wakes up to discover that he has become a monstrous bug. Gregor struggles to come to terms with his new body, he realizes that he is late for work. Gregor is a traveling salesman. Gregors mother, then his father and his sister (Grete) all knock on Gregor door in effort to get him out of bed. Gregors supervisor comes by the house to inquire Gregors absence. Gregor manages to crawl to his bedroom door, open it, and reveal to everyone his shocking new form. Everyone is shocked and afraid of this monstrous bug. Both Gregor and his family settle into a routine in the following weeks and months. Gregors sister then becomes his primary caregiver as she feeds him twice a day and cleans his room. Gregors mom and sister removes all of Gregors furniture out of his room so that he has room to run around. The family then hires a new older cleaning lady. Gregors family also takes in three boarders to make ends meet. The boarders one night invite Grete to play the violin for them. From his room Gregor hears his sister playing the violin and decides to come out of his room. At first amused then horrified the boarders declare that they are going to move out right away the next morning without paying any rent. Grete then insists that Gregor must be gotten rid of at all costs. Gregor then makes his way back to his room. Exhausted and depressed Gregor dies early the next morning. The next morning the cleaning lady discovers Gregor and announces his death. Surrealism makes sense of it all, and it shows us modern man. In art and in literature surrealism forces the reader to find order and meaning. From the short story Metamorphosis I will be identifying six techniques of surrealism.
