To understand what critical and creative thinking is, an individual first must understand what thinking is. Thinking is defined as the "purposeful mental activity over which we exercise some control" (Ruggiero, 2012). Thinking is an everyday process that humans do naturally and willingly, humans have the ability to think about every choice and decision that is made, what separates people from one another is their ability to think intelligently. What separates critical and creative thinking from each other is, creative thinking is to produce and come up with ideas and thoughts, and critical thinking is to evaluate those ideas and thoughts. This short essay will describe a public situation in which critical and/or creative thought could have provided a better outcome. Define free will, truth, knowledge, and opinion. Describe how they are used to form thoughts and the role each play in critically assessing a situation (University of Phoenix, 2014). This paper will also identify three hindrances to the critical thinking process and methods for overcoming these hindrances (University of Phoenix, 2014).

A situation that affects society and hitting the United States is gun control, gun control is one of the hottest topics in our government. With so many shootings in schools in the United States the past few years it has made our government look at gun policy more scrutiny and many parties are calling for reform. Today there is two hundred seventy million guns in the United States, however those are only the guns sold legally. With guns being Americans constitutional right gun control is a very touchy subject to the majority of Americans. With the last mass shooting taking place in Oregon leaving ten dead and seven injured. The way critical and creative thinking could have been used to better the outcome of the situation is by informing people of the events as they happened and not twisting them around to look like guns are at fault.
