AMADEUS PAPER

Each student is required to write a TWO-PAGE TYPED report based on the movie, “Amadeus”, which we will be watching in class. Please follow the format below and STRICTLY ADHERE TO IT. In the event that you miss a class in which the movie is being shown, you have the opportunity of watching it in the library, as the movie will be on reserve after October 24. If you have a Netflix account or other such subscription, you can also rent it out and watch it at home.

The due date for this report will be Monday, October 27 for MWF classes, Tuesday,October 28 for TTH classes, and October 29 for the Wednesday Evening class. This report will constitute 10 (ten) % of your grade. As always, NO LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL BE HONORED. E-mail submissions are NOT acceptable.

The report must include the following:

1. A synopsis of the movie. (What was the movie about?).

2. You must remember to include background information (What cultural period does this pertain to? Middle Ages, Baroque, Classical, Romantic ?).

3. What was going on in the world (specifically Europe) during this time? Refer to you Textbook pp 153-157 for ideas.

4. IMPORTANT- List THREE (3) examples of how the culture of the people in “Amadeus” differs (or is similar) to that of our culture today.

Some aspects to consider-

What were the concert going audiences like in contrast to concerts that you have been to?

Compare or contrast the role of musicians during this time. Perhaps contrast the role of Mozart and Salieri to today’s musical artists like Adele, Beyonce, etc.

Where were concerts held as compared to places where you have attended concerts?

Artists today are often involved in some type of public relation scandals (extra marital affairs, drug abuse, etc.). Were there any scandals represented in Amadeus that cause conflict?(Incidentally, the answer to this question is “yes”!)

Consider the role of family in the movie and contrast that of the family of today’s musical talents....
