Synopsis and Rationale:

The article I chose to talk about was, The Lived Experience of Pediatric Burn Nurses Following Patients Death. I chose this article because being a nurse is going to be a tough, but also a rewarding job. Nurses are also one of the few professions that have to deal with death frequently. I am a dialysis tech and have already lost multiple patients. This article caught my interest because I wanted to see how other nurses have dealt with losing their patients and how they are able to stay professional. The article talked about how some nurses try and distant themselves and not deal with their emotions after losing a patient, but based on the articles researched it seemed like these nurses where the ones to become burned out. The article stated, “By understanding and validating their emotions, it is hoped that nurses will be supported in a way that will enhance a healthy professional environment and personal well-being.” It seems that it is healthier to deal with your emotions in order to not get burned out and maintain a professional environment. Most of the nurses they interviewed said they had limited education on how to deal with losing a patient. I have seen that at my work, a good number of the nurses I work with had a more cynical sense of humor when it comes to certain aspects of their job. The nurses stated that dealing with pediatric death was harder than adult death. One nurse stated that it was hard to maintain a professional environment and not get overly emotionally attached to the situation. This particular nurse said one patient she lost, the mother of this child cried and cried, and the nurse hugged her and cried along with her.
