HISTORICAL CIVIL ENGINEERING PROJECT: CHRYSLER BUILDING

Talking about a historical civil engineering project, we should realize that today’s technology allows us to construct structures that we would never have been able to make in the past. But some of the old creations are just impressive in terms of engineering techniques, architecture, and history. Man’s capability to build such tall buildings is amazing and a very interesting subject in the civil engineering and architecture field. Now we can see our city being covered with sky scrapers which is a major expression of the advancements that we have made as a culture. One skyscraper that has inspired many and has served as a model for high rise buildings that were created after is the Chrysler Building. Even today it still brings out the very same reaction from anyone who views it just as it did when it was first created. The Chrysler building is located on the east side of Manhattan at the intersection of 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue. It was constructed from 1928 to 1930, and was completed in 1930, standing 1,047 feet high with 77 stories. And it was the tallest building in the world between the years 1930 and 1931. It is still the tallest brick building in the world. And currently its the second tallest building in New York. The Chrysler building is commonly recognized as the best example of Art Deco style skyscrapers.

This construction project was initially undertaken by a real estate expert, a former New York State Senator called William J. Reynolds who hired an architect, William Van Alen. Then Walter P. Chrysler, the automobile magnate took over the...
