What has happened to Lulu?

By Charles Causley

1. I think that Lulu ran away from her home. The evidence that supports this are “There’s nothing in her bed but an old rag-doll” suggesting that the bed was empty, “The curtain flapping free” suggesting she had escaped via window and “And only a circle on the dusty shelf where her money-box used to be” suggesting that she had taken what she needed to survive on her own.

2. The view point of this story is told from a younger sibling. The evidence supporting this is that she refers to the woman as mother, that also being the mother of Lulu and also because the persona is continuously asking “What has happened to Lulu” showing a sense of affection and that the sibling misses their older sister.

3. The mother seems gloomy and distressed about the disappearance of her daughter. The evidence that supports this is “And why do you crumble that note on the fire” showing both anger and sorrow and “And why do tear drops fall”.

4. I think Lulu was around 16 or 18 because the phrase “I heard an engine roar” indicates that Lulu was old enough to drive.

5. I think that Lulu and her mother got into a disagreement prior to Lulu’s departure. “I woke to voices late last night” suggests this and then Lulu possibly leaving the house in anger, “I heard en engine roar”.

Please don’t look for me, I promise I’ll be fine. I feel as if you don’t understand me and I just need to be on my own from now on. Please tell my sister that I love her and I’ll miss her.

8. The first two lines are repeated at the end because it emphasizes how desperate the sister was trying to figure out what had happened to Lulu. It also shows the...
