The biogas project at Gweru Polytechnic and the neighbouring Northlea suburb has seen the adoption of JIT, Toyota Production Systems and Lean operations into their processes. It has ensured that the raw materials are brought to the construction site when needed and in time as the name Just-in –Time implies. Lean operations have been employed to ensure that there is no excess inventory that will have an impact on the storage costs. JIT which emphasises on the elimination of waste has been adopted to ensure that no money is tied up in inventory; it should be used on other activities that are valuable to the institution. Preventative maintenance is done to ensure that failure is prevented. Since the project is relatively new, there has not been major breakdown maintenance. Students who work on the project are also empowered to make decisions and are viewed as skilled workers, though they work under the supervision of their lecturers.
