The University of Alabama’s Office of Student Conduct states that individuals under 21 years of age are not permitted to consume alcohol or be in the possession of alcohol. Like many rules and regulations, this rule is implemented in order to maintain a healthy, secure community. The safety of the students and the prosperity of the campus are at risk if left to the devices of adolescent alcohol consumption. The University’s Division of Student Affairs regards this rule as, simply, a non-negotiable because in the state of Alabama it is a crime punishable by a revocation of the offender’s driver’s license, a payment of fines, community service, enrollment in an alcohol education program, or perhaps, even a combination of said punishments.
