Operating Systems and its specific applications

Operating System (OS) is system software that collaborates between computer software and hardware components to provide common services to computer programs, which in turn calls on OS on the system it is installed to function.

Operating Systems can be found on many electronic devices, from hand-held Mobile phones, video game controllers to personal/web-server and super computers, which occupy an entire basement.

Variants of OS include Apple OS X, Linux/Unix and Microsoft windows, Android and iOS.

General classification of OS is:

1. Single and Multi-tasking OS

2. Single and Multi-user

3. Distributed – network of computers who act as one single computer.

4. Template – virtual machine created as a guest OS, found in cloud computing.

5. Embedded – used on small PDA machines, example: Windows CE and Minix 3

6. Real-Time

7. Library –services provided in form of libraries, composed of applications and config code to construct unikernels.

LINUX:

It is an open source operating system that is developed collaboratively, ie any developer can develop the OS and no organization is solely responsible for its development and its support features and debug. Companies participating in the development share the research and development costs among its partners and competitors. Over 1,000 developers from different organizations contribute to kernel releases. Linux which started as a server OS and can be found in desktop OS, android phones, GPS navigators, e-book readers, Monitors, video recorders, Yamaha Musical instruments.

They are being installed on system BIOS of desktop and laptop computers, which make users access their devices in seconds, by bringing up a streamlined Linux environment. They are found on Mobile Internet Devices (MID). Linux establishes cloud services like Amazon’s A3 to work with superior capability.
