New Hire Hypothetical

Situation

I’m the head of the HR department for the biggest company in a northern Ohio town (NOT). I have the choice between two candidates for one position. One candidate is named Johnny. Johnny is a recent college graduate that boasts a very high GPA and has an accounting degree from a great business school. Johnny is not from NOT and has no connection to the community other than the desire for this job. Johnny has no experience in the accounting field and has not qualified to be a CPA. His salary demands are $55,000 per year. The other candidate is Karen. Karen is a 55 year old former CPA with a wealth of industry experience and would be able to step into the job position with no supervision. Karen is a long-time resident of NOT and has many community ties. Her demanded salary is $40,000 per year. However, Karen is a convicted felon after being caught embezzling money at a previous job. Her reasoning for embezzling was to cover the medical expenses of her ailing parents because she did not have the funds to do so. When approached about the subject, she immediately admitted to her wrongdoing, served a six month jail sentence, paid restitution in full, and completed 18 months of probation.

Analysis

Additionally, since he has no experience, we can train him to perform the job by our standards without any previous contradicting notions from other jobs.

Johnny Cons: Comparatively, Johnny’s lack of experience and CPA, higher salary demands, and need for training make him a less attractive candidate than Karen. Additionally, since he will require training, another employee will need to take time from their own duties to assist in his mentorship. Finally,...
