I. BACKGROUND

RATIONALE:

The Philippine government, through Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), is responsible for the conservation, management, development, and proper use of the country’s environment and natural resources for the benefits and welfare of the Present and futures generations of the Filipinos. One of the great concerns and challenges that the Philippine government now faces is the management and prevention of increasing occurrences of threats to coastal and marine ecosystem such as land-based pollution and eutrophication, overfishing, destructive fishing, and illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, alterations of physical habitats, invasions of exotic species and global climate change.

The Seminar entitled “A Challenge for the Future: The Ecosystem Approach to Conserving Coastal and Marine Biodiversity” is a strategy that provides knowledge and awareness to MPA students on the importance of conservation of coastal and marine biodiversity, along with the environmental issues and concerns such as climate change, industrialization, along with the environmental issues and concerns of coastal and urbanization as they become part of the future Public Administrators of the Philippines. This seminar also improves the understanding of MPA students on the vulnerability of marine biodiversity to climate change, focusing on ecosystems and species that are in particular risk. Furthermore, it will focus on the conservation of the marine environment as a complex matter, involving multiple jurisdictions and stakeholders across a range of marine industries. Implementation of a national approach would require the cooperation and commitment of all relevant government agencies.
