This paper will look at the trends, opportunities and threats facing Dean’s Auto Clinic. It will look at the remote and industry environments as well as the company’s strengths and weaknesses in order to determine the long-term objectives for the company.

Factors in the remote environment will help to determine which direction Dean’s Auto Clinic will go in the future. These factors include social and cultural, political, technological, demographic, and economic.

Social and Cultural

“One of the most profound social changes in recent years has been the entry of large numbers of women into the labor market” (Pearce & Robinson, 2004). This has led to the “demand for a wide range of products and services necessitated by their absence from the home” (Pearce & Robinson, 2004). In addition, individuals are working longer hours and have less time for family and leisure. “Almost one in five, including both salaried and hourly, professional and blue-collar employees, now reports working fifty or more hours per week” (Figart & Golden, 2000).

This trend affects the auto repair business because individuals have less time to maintain and repair their vehicles. Dean’s Auto Clinic can adapt to this trend by offering later service hours to accommodate individuals who work past 5 or 6 o’clock. The company will also stay open on Saturdays and some Sundays. There are auto-repair facilities in the Chicago area that are completing oil changes as well as engine swaps late into the evenings (Popely, 2006). If an individual gets done with work at 8 o’clock and finds his car will not start, he will be able to call Dean’s Auto Clinic. As the company grows and gets busier, the extended hours will ensure that all vehicles will get repaired or maintained in a timely fashion.
