Abstract

This paper will note several conversations with different people and took place in various places. The Association of Language Awareness defines Language Awareness as explicit knowledge about language, and conscious perception and sensitivity in language learning, language teaching and language use. It covers a wide spectrum of fields. For example, Language Awareness issues include exploring the benefits that can be derived from developing a good knowledge about language, a conscious understanding of how languages work, of how people learn them and use them (ALA 2008).

I’m good

1. Context & Utterance: I asked one of my sons’ friends if he would like something to drink. His response was “I’m good”.

2. Point of Interest: language function: explaining – language form: declarative sentence. This would be another way to say no thank you or just no.

3. Why? Young adults today have a way of using their own language to communicate. For example, they will say “Dude” when talking to both a male or female, whatsup when they answer a phone. I have heard them say “nice-nice” after one tells the other one something.

And “Da”

1. Context & Utterance: I was at work when I listened to a teleconference call. The person presenting was a foreign speaking person. She used “and da” many times in the presentation. Each time she was done with a slide, she would say “go to slide da six Instead of saying “do” in her statements, she would use dos.” For example, “and da future will be …..and da first quarter in 2010 ….will do’s better.

2. Point of Interest: language function and use of vocabulary.

3. Why? English as a second language was obvious and she is just learning to speak English. This may be a nervous habit or a way to take a break to translate to...
