Guidelines for Case Study Report

(MEDICAL SCIENCE RESEARCH PROJECT)

The objective of this case study report is to provide an opportunity for the students to demonstrate their ability to integrate and synthesize basic concepts and principles that are central to clinical practice. Each student is required to prepare Medical Science Research Project which consists of four Case Study Reports, one case study from each clinical placement.

Appropriate cases for the Case Study Report may include:

i. A patient with a chronic illness requiring on-going care

ii. A patient with terminal illness

iii. A patient admitted to the hospital or be transferred from one living situation to another (eg: from own home to nursing care facility)

iv. A patient or family of non-traditional life styles (eg: extended, blended, gay, interracial, single parents, drug addicts in half-way home)

v. A patient or family about to enter a new phase of the family life cycle (birth, death, marriage etc)

vi. A patient or family about to whom the preceptor (doctor/lecturer) need more extensive information

vii. Other suggested by the preceptor/supervisor.

How to do a Case Study?

i. Conduct an interview of the patient/family in the clinic/ward to gather data on the patient/family and the corresponding problem and condition.

ii. Conduct at least one visit to the patient’s current home or to home of the immediate family if the patient is hospitalized

iii. Collect enough data to construct at least a three-generation family genogram

iv. Prepare a paper with the assistance of conference, textbook chapters and handouts on topics such as the genogram, family life cycles and home visits

v. The paper is to be submitted at the end of the 16 weeks of the course for evaluation as part of your grade.
